‘The Day I Left You’ – A poem that puts into words how overwhelming, exciting, powerful and fragile the journey of finding oneself is
The day I left you I became so small,
I found myself in a world of giants who grew so tall.
Further down darkness I do fall,
But, there’s a man down here bigger than all.
He caught me with gentle hands as I left the universe,
He told me I should have put myself first.
He said they are animals up there, they chose intently to do what’s worst,
They are like vampires with an insatiable thirst.
This man showed me his land and how things work,
I saw him ignore armies and nukes like they didn’t even hurt.
I said ‘who are you, no weapon has left a scar?’
His reply, ominous and wise ‘ some call me God, from a land so far,
Others say I’m the Devil with untamed rage in disguise,
If I said one day I’ll be you, would it be a surprise?’
I looked to the skies for an answer,
Then to my soul, I had to chance a.
Guess as my body rolled words I didn’t know,
From my tongue, then I ignited up in smoke’.
I turned around, a mirror here,
I was looking at this strange man from behind his eyes so clear.
I had become the beast,
It felt like God and the Devil were now deceased.
And all that was left was me,
Completely and utterly empty.
That was the day I left you,
I fall smaller still, if you only knew.
